Introduction
The Novell® TCP/IP Transport for DOS consists of the following software components:
- TCP/IP Transport software
- Network drivers (including DOS ODI drivers)
- Utilities (DIALUP, PING, and LWPCON)
The following sections describe these components.
TCP/IP Transport Software
The following programs provide the TCP/IP transport:
- TCP/IP Transport driver: TCPIP.EXE
- RFC-1001/1002 compliant NetBIOS driver: RFCNBIOS.EXE
- Reverse ARP server: RARPD.EXE
- SNMP MIB-2 agent program (TSR): SNMP.EXE
- MS Windows Sockets API support: WINSOCK.DLL, WLIBSOCK.DLL, and NOVASYNC.EXE
- Components for SLIP_PPP drivers: NESL.COM, NCOMX.COM, and NWREMOTE.COM
The TCP/IP Transport software provides data-communications services to Berkeley 4.3 socket and MS Windows Sockets applications and NetBIOS users. In the context of the
Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) networking reference model from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the TCP/IP protocols support Level 3 (the Network Layer) and Level 4 (the Transport Layer).
The Novell TCP/IP Transport for DOS provides the following standard protocols:
- Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
- User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
- Internet Protocol (IP)
- Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)
- Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
- Reverse Address Resolution Protocol (RARP)
- BOOTP (standard protocol that provides TCP/IP configuration information)
- Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
- Management Information Base (MIB)
- NetBIOS Service Interface using the RFC-1001/1002 compliant B-node (broadcast) type of
the NetBIOS Protocol (RFC NetBIOS)
A workstation running NetBIOS software must also be running the TCP/IP Transport software.
The TCP/IP Transport software also includes support for MS Windows Enhanced Mode operation.
The TCP/IP Transport software operates on any ODI driver that supports any of the following data link encoding standards:
- Ethernet DIX
- Ethernet 802.2 and SNAP
- Token Ring 802.2 and SNAP
- ARCnet*
- IBM* PCN2
- FDDI
- SLIP or PPP asynchronous serial line
For more information about IEEE 802 Networks, refer to RFC 1042, A Standard for the Transmission of IP Datagrams over IEEE 802 Networks.
Network Drivers
The TCP/IP Transport software supplies the ODI-compatible software required to access a TCP/IP network from DOS and MS Windows. This software includes the following:
- ODI drivers for supported network boards
- A Link Support Layer program used with ODI drivers (LSL.COM)
- A program that supports the coexistence of the Network Driver Interface Specification
(NDIS) and the Open Datalink Interface (ODI) Specification: ODINSUP.COM
Utilities
The following utilities are provided for use with the TCP/IP Transport software:
- A utility that establishes dial-in connections over SLIP/PPP (DIALUP.EXE)
- A utility that checks a remote host connection and status (PING.EXE)
- A utility that displays local and remote configuration information, network statistics,
and TCP/IP service status (LWPCON.EXE)
