Oak Technology

Oak was a graphics card and sound card manufacturer for the IBM PC and its compatibles. They also made a 286 and 386 motherboard chipset, which is covered on this page.

Motherboard and Graphics Cards

OakHorizon 286 and 386SX Chipset

Launched: 1989

Two versions of the chipset were released: the OTI-050LAP was designed for use in laptops, whilst the OTI-050DESK was for desktop PCs. Both are five-chip chipsets, incorporating the following:-

OTI-051 - System support logic
OTI-052 - I/O Control logic
OTI-053 - DMA and memory controller
OTI-054 - Address buffer, Real-time clock, CMOS RAM
OTI-055 - Data buffer and power manager (only needed in the laptop version)

OTI037C ("Suntra")

Launched: 1988
Bus: ISA 16-bit
Memory: 256 KB DRAM
Ports: 15-pin DSUB (analogue video output), 9-pin DSUB (digital video output)
RAMDAC: unknown
RAMDAC Speed: 50 MHz or 35 MHz
FCC ID: unknown
VESA Standard:
BIOS Dates: 01/08/90
Known BIOS Versions: ECv2.13-35
Price: ?

The OTI037C (or OTI-037C) is a Super VGA chipset from 1988. Whilst it's used on 16-bit ISA video cards, this chipset only runs at 16 bits wide to access the VGA BIOS extensions - access to video memory and the video controller itself runs at 8-bit. The data bus that receives video data is also 8-bit.

Due to the 16-bit VGA BIOS access, cards based on the OTI-037C typically have two video ROM chips - one for 'odd' and a second for 'even'.

Sound Cards

Diamond Multimedia OEM'd a few sound cards despite being largely remembered for their graphics cards. Oak Technology were the development company behind these. Oak Technology exited the PC audio and 3D graphics markets in the quarter ended March 31st, 1998.

Mozart (OTI601)

FM synthesizer: Yamaha YMF262
Audio codec: Crystal CS4231-KL EP

A basic board offering only Ad Lib, SoundBlaster 1.x (mono output) compatibility. The OAK OTI-601 / OTI-605 "Mozart" chip itself was co-developed by Oak and Media Chip who later got bought by OPTi, which is why it is related to OPTI's MAD16.
Panasonic, Mitsumi, Sony and IDE CD-ROM connectors - only one can be used at any one time.

The OTI601 can be found on the following cards:

  • PAC Magic 93365-2
  • Lxycon Sound Booster (FCC ID: IEW30601211)

Mozart-16

Introduced in 1994
FM synthesizer: Yamaha YMF262
Audio codec: Analog Devices AD1846
Oak OTI601 chip
FCC ID: IEW30601211
PnP.

If the long number at the bottom of the Oak chip is 9-digits long, the card has a 'B'-chipset and is not MPU-401 compatible. If it's 11 digits long and has either 'EE' or 'FF' in it, the card is an 'E' or 'F' chipset, and is MPU-401 compatible.
Panasonic, Mitsumi, Sony and IDE CD-ROM connectors - only one can be used at any one time.
The default IRQ for this board is 11.

Other variants of this card are called the Mozart LCS-9620.

Drivers: DOS & Windows 3.x (OPL4 support in Win3.x), NT / XP, Windows 9x
